Back in October, I had the pleasure of attending the F Music Festival in Los Angeles. The purpose of this event are many, but one of the primary ones is to allow record labels to show retailers what is hot and upcoming in their releases. Subsequently, the attendees of the show end up getting inundated with CDs on every shape and form.
One of the CDs that was put into my hands this year was from a New York band called Pist-On. Kooky name... it quickly just got added to the ever growing pile of "things to listen too". A couple of weeks ago I was rooting around for something new to listen too when I came upon this CD again. Alright, I thought, I'll give you a go...
Boy, am I ever glad that I did. This is a FANTASTIC album! I have long been a fan of Megadeth and Metallica, mostly because these bands were heavy, but they did not forget that music, really good music, is still about melodies. Well, I can now add Pist-On to that roster of bands.
Right from the first track, called Parole, the album takes on a flavor that tastes real good. There is a wonderful harmony of vocals throughout the songs, especially when Val Ium lends her support.
But, let me make one thing clear... this album is HEAVY! But, it is also obvious that the band takes it's direction not just from the thrash side of life, but also from the early alternative. This point is highlighted by the inclusion of a cover of the Smith's classic "Shoplifters Of The World Unite". Henry Font is credited with the writing of the rest of the tracks on the CD. Henry has obviously studied in the schools of Mustaine and Zombie. This band would work well on a tour opening for Megadeth or White Zombie. What a night that would be!
This album has a flow and a feel that makes it a CD I played again and again just because I couldn't get the songs out of my head. If you are looking for something a little different, try it out. You can be sure I will buy their next offering without hesitation.
