1997 Year in Review
'97's New Hot Blood

They may have been scooped up by Atlantic Records, and the major-label buyout from Mayhem/Fierce Records may have resulted in a name adjustment from Pist.On to the politically correct Piston, but bass player Val Ium insists that the band's fans know the score. "We'll always be Pist.On (read: Pissed On)," she quips. "It hasn't really changed a thing, it just makes us more acceptable to the K-Mart crowd," frontman Henry Font continues, with Val adding, "Even though we're not being sold in K-Mart." So maybe the band's debut, Number One, isn't extending open arms to the Bible Belt, but that hasn't stopped the Brooklyn quartet from landing tours with Queensrÿche, the Misfits and Skunk Anansie. "We've been very fortunate to tour with bands that treat us well," says Henry. "And if they don't we'll kill them," Val chimes in. Any deaths so far? "The Misfits are really cool, good guys, but the lead singer has an attitude probelm, he's just a cocky kid who needs to get smacked around a bit," she elaborates. "Atlantic is great, it gave us the opportunity to tour more, to reach more people, to have better distribution, an entire staff..." details Henry, with Val adding, "We keep getting new chances every day." "We've had many lives with this album, and that's a really good thing," says Henry. "We think the album is still very fresh to a lot of people here in America."
